You may feel intimidated when you pitch to a journalist for the first time. We tend to think of the worst possible outcomes like, what if they don’t like my pitch? or what if they think I’m unprepared? Everyone feels nervous doing something for the first time. Last month I got the opportunity to pitch one of my client’s programs to several news stations in California. I wouldn’t say it was fantastic. I was nervous and I got sent to voicemail plenty of times. After some trial and error, here is what I learned about crafting a successful phone pitch.

There is a reason why I am a photographer. Or rather why I feel more comfortable being behind the camera; it is because being in front of the camera is really uncomfortable. The photographer behind the camera is asking you to expose yourself. They are able to see every detail of your face. It’s unnerving to have someone look at your essence and judge you. Feeling uncomfortable while modeling can ruin a photo. It is the photographer’s job to make their model/client feel comfortable. Confidence in oneself is one of the many interpersonal skills needed to succeed in PR. In an industry predominantly comprised by women, it’s important to realize how to use your voice assuredly to get things accomplished, and be recognized as a leader. As a woman in this industry, I must realize that having a voice means I am contributing to the conversation by adding value and true perspective. Using my voice means thinking strategically about what, how and when to say something. Ultimately, I’ve learned that through self-confidence I can gain respect and authority.
